What is true luxury to you?

If you think the luxuries in life is a 42 inch flat-screen TV , a Rolex watch or a leather-upholstered Mercedes…well think again.  Lifestyle in other parts of the globe can teach North American’s more about the true luxuries in life. In the current economic conditions, we could learn a few things about luxury from the Finns. Walking down the streets of Helsinki, the capital, you may notice a lack of grand architecture and extravagant homes, and lots of modest cars. Helsinki is a nice  city, and it has some gems of modern design, but to the “more is better” brainwashed North American’s that are so use to tall skyscrapers and seeing fancy BMW’s and Mercedes on the streets all the time, Finland might seem a bit dull.

Here are a few tips to hunker down and save like crazy.

Consider these extreme money saving tips to cut your grocery bill down to under $7 a day.

• Buying in bulk
• Making your own coffee
• Freezing leftover food

Take saving money to the next level.

• Only buy sale items,
• Stay away from brand loyalty

A lot of people are suffering and struggling through the worse recession since the last great depression. All over the United States, Canada and abroad people are losing jobs, homes and wondering where their next meal is coming from.  Below is just one example of how the lives of the struggling are unfolding.

With the way the economy is right now, and the job market so uncertain I think a lot of people are holding off on making big ticket items. As for myself, there are two products I specifically want to purchase…a 42 inch LCD TV and a computer for my Hackintosh project, but will wait until the company I work for make its decisions on laying off more people…so there is no sense in buying a large screen LCD TV to find out later, the company is letting go employees, that would just not be financially prudent. Even if my company doesn’t let me go, I think I may still hold off until Christmas or early next year to make my big ticket purchases.

Looking at the my FireFox browser, which default homepage is Yahoo, I can see clearly the the swine flu outbreak has taken over the headlines. When, I go to other other websites like MSN and even to my local area news websites like the Toronto Star, it’s always on the front page and this reminded me of the S.A.R.S incident back in 2003 where Toronto and Hong Kong was affected hard.

As you can see from the chart above, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has had quite a drop since last october, from 14,000 top down to now around 7000 points.  Is the worst over?  Have the markets hit bottom yet?

It is no surprise that the financial meltdown experienced by the United States has caused a slow down of economic growth globally. Things have gotten bad here in Canada with record job losses, and people drowning in debt that they are having a hard time paying off.
